About: Eugene came to us as a baby from a working farm that we receive many severely neglected and sick sheep from. The agricultural animal laws in Alberta are very bleak; agricultural animals are entitled to food, water, shelter, and not much else. Despite our attempts to report this working farm that we receive many sick and dying sheep from, the animal laws in Alberta deem them to be following procedures; culling or surrendering the sick and dying sheep. Eugene arrived with a painted X on his back, as he was set to be culled in the coming days. Many farmers err on the side of culling straight away, rather than seeing a vet, as culling is deemed more cost effective and efficient. Thankfully, a concerned citizen stepped in and did as much as they could to help facilitate rescue.

Like many of the sheep that arrive from this working farm, Eugene had an awful case of Coccidiosis which many agricultural animals contract when they are babies in mostly unhygienic environments. Cocci attacks the intestinal tract resulting in diarrhea, abdominal pain, severe illness, and even death. Eugene also had a horrific case of pneumonia and was no longer growing. Eugene was provided medical attention accordingly and is now a happy and healthy resident! Many, if not all, of the severely sick and dying agricultural animals we get simply needed basic medical attention to improve.
Eugene's transformation was like night and day. He has grown into the most handsome gentleman with soft, kind eyes. He is an introvert who prefers the company of his herd to the company of people. When Eugene arrived, he was placed with two of our most vulnerable sheep at the time, Casper and Olga, who also came from the same working farm. Eugene bonded with them deeply, but they have both sadly crossed the rainbow bridge. He persevered through this sense of loss, and now acts like an uncle to all new intakes of sheep from this sheep farm. Specifically Eli and Ernie, who arrived at FARRM as babies, have grown very attached to their uncle Eugene and don't go anywhere without him! Eugene is empathetic, kind, and nurturing. He is the sweetest boy and we are so lucky to have him as part of our herd!
