About: Amelia came to FARRM in the spring after a concerned follower of our page reached out to us regarding a very neglectful situation on a nearby farm. They had been helping facilitate basic care to the animals on a farm where the owners were no longer interested in caring for their animals. The animals were all in very rough shape.
In particular, it became very clear that Amelia required immediate medical attention. Amelia had been a victim of frostbite, as the tips of her ears had fallen off and she was unable to walk on her hind legs. Upon rescue, it was discovered that both of her back feet had fallen off completely and she was walking on bare, exposed bone. She was also covered in sheep keds and had a bad case of pneumonia. Amelia lived like this for months before rescue. She was absolutely terrified of people and would run on the exposed bone on her hind legs to try and hide. With a long journey ahead of her, her hind legs took months to heal fully after surgeries, and she took even longer to feel even slightly comfortable around people.
Amelia was fitted for prosthetics for her hind legs to help aid her mobility and make her more comfortable. The prosthetics fit her well and she adored running around in them, but unfortunately, she outgrew them quickly. Rather than rushing to get her refitted for these very expensive prosthetics, Amelia is testing out walking on her fully healed stumps. As the skin has grown over and calloused, she is doing quite well without the prosthetics. Once she finishes growing, we plan to refit her for prosthetics.
Amelia has come such a long way. Although she still isn't a huge fan of people, she is a lot more comfortable being in their presence and comes right up to our volunteers when they have bananas! She is endearing, resilient, and soft. Amelia spends her days with her absolute best friend Eloise roaming around the property snacking on bushes, lounging in the shade, and calling out to one another. Amelia is important, special, and beautiful. We are so thankful to have her as part of our FARRM family.
