Hello! I'm Diego!

Pet Pleasures:  Laying in the sunshine.

Pet Peeves:  Not being able to remember where you put                  something.

Arrived at FARRM:  2023

Sex:  Male

Age:  1993

About:  Diego was surrendered by his owner who could no longer take care of him. Diego arrived at FARRM with a leg injury that is thought to be a severe injury to his stifle. The stifle is a complex joint in a horse's leg, with a similar function to the human knee. Due to lack of initial medical care and his age, Diego's injury never healed properly and he will forever have mobility issues. With his age and injury, Diego requires pain management and lots of TLC to have great quality of life. His previous owners traveled frequently, and as Diego was their only animal, they thought he would receive better care here at FARRM.

We spent the first six months of Diego's residency trying to slowly integrate him with our three other horses and get him to gain some weight. Equines are very territorial and can be quite mean to newcomers, especially the old and lame. This integration proved to be quite stressful for Diego, so we decided to let him roam freely around the property where he could live out his retirement in peace.

One of our other equine residents, a miniature pony named Sage, is an older gal and was losing a little bit of weight. We temporarily placed Sage out in the main yard with Diego to offer her the chance at a less restricted diet and grass to pasture on. After a brief kicking session from Sage, the two bonded immediately. Diego and Sage were now inseparable. The two ate leaves off trees together, rolled around in the grass together, and called out to one another if they weren't in each other's sight. Shortly after this newfound love affair, we welcomed another miniature pony named Jade. The three are now a bonded trio that do everything together. With his age and health concerns, Diego is on daily pain medication and receives a special nutrient rich diet. Diego's health continues to be monitored to make him as happy and comfortable as possible. Diego is wise, gentle, and beautiful. He is a wonderful companion to his best buddies and we are honored to have him as a resident living out the rest of his days enjoying the beauty of retirement.
