About: Nacho was surrendered to us by a working meat farm. Nacho tested positive for a highly contagious chronic infectious disease known as Caseous Lymphadenitis. Also known as CL, this disease with no cure manifests as abscesses both internal and external near the lymph nodes and other organs. Once animals on working farms test positive for CL, culling them is their only fate. An animal with CL is seen as useless, as the disease is contagious and zoonotic; the animal would require monitoring (if they develop an external abscess it could burst and infect other animals). Goats and sheep with CL cannot be used for meat, as their meat would be infected and unconsumable. Thankfully, Nacho's owners loved her personality and did not want to "waste" her. Nacho's personality saved her, however this is not the reality for millions of other agricultural animals. CL is managed very well with twice annual vaccinations and boosters. We rarely see any signs of the disease, which is the case for Nacho, we have seen no abscesses since her intake years ago.
Nacho arrived at FARRM one hour before another intake. All new FARRM residents must be quarantined before joining the herd. Nacho and the other goat Spiderman were immediately quarantined together and fell madly in love with each other. The two have been inseparable ever since. Although Nacho is not considered a special needs resident, she resides in our specials pen with her partner Spidey who has deformed legs. As long as animals that test positive for CL are monitored and provided with proper and adequate medical care, they can live long and happy lives. Nacho continues to be a happy, healthy, vibrant, and rebellious resident.
Nacho loves people almost as much as she loves Spidey and loves showing it! Many of our volunteers go home with traces of Nacho all over them from hours of snuggles with her. Nacho spends her days trying to open gates, climb trees, and cuddling up with her Spidey in the sun.
