About:  Athena was a foster dog we agreed to help out with nearly 12 years ago. Athena was part of a seizure of Great Danes from a backyard breeder in Edmonton. Athena was in very bad shape when she arrived and needed a lot of medical attention.

Unfortunately, the rescue we agreed to foster Athena for decided that she was too much for them financially to handle so we got left to figure everything out on our own. We are so glad she remained in our care as she has been the most incredible dog and mother to our orphaned babies. Athena arrived with a fractured spine, multiple wounds to her face, a broken tail, and very scared. For the first few months Athena lived in our kitchen, afraid to leave.

At the breeder's property the dogs were all chained to pallets outside to keep them from jumping over the fences, and it is suspected that as a puppy one of those pallets was drug over her and was the cause of the injuries she sustained. To this day, Athena is one of our most intricate medical cases. She does not absorb nutrients properly so despite eating an incredible amount of food she struggles to maintain a healthy weight. She has a condition similar to megaesophogus and her stomach does not close properly when she eats, causing her to often regurgitate her food. Athena has nerve damage and struggles with incontinence from her spinal injury, and has also had strictures in her esophogus that have needed surgery.

Despite all of her medical issues Athena is a happy-go-lucky senior with a lot of love for everyone and everything around her.
