About:

Dottie came from a working farm that reached out to FARRM after a very frustrating journey trying to get this sweet girl some medical attention. Dottie was born with some medical concerns that her previous owners had attempted to address via a vet clinic. After receiving inadequate advice and care regarding Dottie's medical care plan, she continued to worsen, very clearly in pain. As a last resort, Dottie's owners reached out to us for some help. After hearing Dottie's initial symptoms, we arranged for her to see our vet partner immediately. It was clear we were dealing with a complicated little lady and time was not on her side. We knew based off how she was presenting externally that she was likely septic and needed immediate medical intervention. Our vet partners were able to locate the source of Dottie’s issues during our initial exam.

It was very clear that she had some sort of infection at birth, likely from her umbilical cord, that went untreated. Her joints in her back legs were badly infected which is very hard to treat after the infection has had time to set in and spread.

Dottie's second concern was that one of her eyes was badly infected. Our vets did a dye test and examined the eye, which had shrunken back into the eye socket. During this we were able to determine that her eye had not endured trauma but instead had abscessed internally. This eye will eventually need to be removed.

Dottie’s third and most disastrous issue is located in one of her shoulders. At first, we assumed the front leg joints were also infected, and the reason she was walking tenderly on her front end, but after exam and taking X-rays we discovered that the bones in her one shoulder have been badly damaged by the infection she is also challenged with in her back legs. The bones have a rough texture where they should be smooth, and this is currently the cause of her discomfort in her front end. As she continues to grow, this will only become more of an issue for her, potentially eventually making her immobile.

Since her initial vet visit, Dottie had many follow up visits to have her leg joints flushed in an effort to help her body rid itself of the chronic infection that has settled in these joints. In addition to efforts being made to rid her of the septic joint, we have also started her on a long stretch of Adequan injections to hopefully provide her more comfort in her shoulder movements. She is on a consistent pain management regime and her quality of life is being considered at each moment of the day.

Her medical journey will be long and has only just started. Dottie is still full of life, she is taking on each day and fighting with a team that stands behind her. Her life will be her own to live out however long or short that may be.
