About:   Sebastian is approximately a 15 year old mini horse we rescued from a very difficult situation. Sebastian came to us after being abandoned with another horse at a home that was ill equipped and unable to care for them. Attempts were made to rehome the animals once it was clear that the owner wasn’t coming back for them but the caretakers were unsuccessful. Unfortunately, in the meantime the horses did not receive the care they needed. We were too late to save Sebastian’s mate, she passed away only hours before our arrival, but Sebastian was rescued and able to receive the care he desperately needed.

It was a heartbreaking journey to see him grieving the loss of his mate when we arrived at the property. He was clearly in distress standing with his deceased mate and not wanting to be led from her. We took our time with him, got him haltered, fed him some snacks and examined him quickly before we got him trailered for a long journey home. It was apparent that his hooves had been neglected for some time and would need to be tended to immediately to give him better mobility. We also noticed that one of his eyes was badly damaged and recessed into the socket and would need some form of care. Given his poor condition and the lack of any vetting we opted to head to the vet after hours rather than wait to get bloodwork and a fecal ran immediately before returning to the vet the next day for a full exam and an initial hoof trim.

Results from bloodwork and fecal showed a very high worm load that needed to be treated with caution. Deworming too aggressively because of the high concentration of worms could cause him to become impacted. During his first vet visit we X-rayed and trimmed his hooves back, got the sharp and poorly worn teeth filed down, and did a full wellness exam. It was determined at this time that he would need his right eye removed, a castration, and further hoof care. Although his bone structure was abnormal in his hoof area because of the way he has been forced to walk on his hooves we were relieved to see that he still had a healthy intact bone structure.

In the coming days Sebastian would be kept on pain management and see our ferrier to have his hooves further corrected. He then underwent his castration surgery and got fully vaccinated and was scheduled once again to head to back to our vet for his eye removal surgery.
